COMprehensive Environment for Traffic Management Training by Simulation (COMETTS)
Empowering the Next Generation of Traffic Management Specialists
Developed for and used by the FAA, COMETTS is a state-of-the-art simulation system designed to train aspiring and existing traffic management specialists at the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC) in the concepts and techniques for efficient and effective strategic traffic management.
This advanced tool is now available for academic institutions and airline training programs, offering a hands-on, real-world Traffic Flow Management (TFM) learning experience.

COMETTS Features

Real-World Simulation Tools
- Traffic Situation Display (TSD) Emulator: Display live traffic and weather, create Flow Evaluation Areas (FEA) and Flow Constrained Areas (FCA) to monitor user-tailored traffic flows, plan and implement Playbook and custom reroute initiatives
- Flight Schedule Monitor (FSM): Monitor arrival demand at airports along with user defined FEAs and FCAs; plan and implement Ground Delay Programs (GDP) and Ground Stops (GS).
- Scenario Development Tool (SDT): Develop new terminal and SVRWX scenarios with significant flexibility using a historical database, updated daily, of over two years of air traffic and weather data. Provide narrative descriptions of the scenario, along with step-by-step instructions for the instructors.

Dynamic Training Environment
- Instructor-Led Sessions: Instructors select, start, and control scenarios, guiding students through complex traffic management problems.
- Student/Teacher Dashboards: Scenario overview that includes a detailed summary, conditions, set of objectives, and resources such as training level and duration. Evaluate performance with metrics.
- Realistic Messaging System: Simulate communication with third-party entities such as flight operators, local traffic management facilities, and weather facilities.
- Hands-On Problem Solving: Students employ TSD and FSM systems to resolve real-time traffic management challenges.

Diverse Scenarios
- Terminal Scenarios: Tackle arrival demand/capacity imbalances at airports by implementing GDPs and GSs using FSM’s. Access flight plans, actual departure times, and cancelations
- Severe Weather Scenarios (SVRWX): Manage en route challenges caused by weather and other factors by issuing reroutes using TSD and implementing Airspace Flow Programs (AFP) via the TSD, FEA, FCA, interactively explore the Integrated Collaborative Routing (ICR) concept. Weather data gathered from the Corridor Integrated Weather System (CIWS) and the TFM Convective Forecast (TCF) as well as Meteorological Aerodrome Reports (METAR), and Terminal Area Forecast (TAF) data.
