Cloud FMS

Cloud Flight Management System (CFMS) helps connect Flight Management Systems (FMS) to authorized applications that pull data from the FMS.  These other applications are typically Air Traffic Control System (ATCS) apps used to manage traffic and traffic flows within the National Airspace System (NAS). CFMS is part of the “Connected NAS” concept. By implementing a Cloud version of the FMS of each aircraft and hosting them on commercial cloud services, ground automation systems can perform more accurate trajectory planning for evaluation and optimization.

In January 2025, Mosaic ATM successfully demonstrated the power of Cloud FMS in a NASA-sponsored live flight test of decentralized aircraft coordination. Cloud FMS served as the digital twin of each participating aircraft’s onboard system, executing a shared rule set to autonomously sequence and space flights approaching a common waypoint—without centralized control. Each Cloud FMS instance communicated securely via internet protocols and interfaced with live and virtual aircraft using the GoGo air-to-ground network. The trial validated Cloud FMS’s ability to support distributed, rule-based decision-making in real-world airspace, advancing the Digital Flight vision for highly automated, interoperable air traffic management.

Mosaic ATM has developed CFMS software, but its distribution is limited to authorized users. The papers linked below are a start if you are interested in learning more about CFMS.
